Call for microprojects
Social Media for Citizens and Public Sector Collaboration (SOMUS) invites proposals for microprojects related to the research conducted by Somus.
Somus project is funded by the MOTIVE programme of the Academy of Finland (2009-2010).
The consortium in Somus also includes the Open Research Swarm, a self-organizing group of researchers who collaborate mainly over the Internet and utilize social media tools in research work. It has its own budget share, which allows the SOMUS project to utilize the expertise of external researchers for short periods of time, for very specific tasks that add value. One of the goals of Somus is to define and validate a model for utilizing and involving the Open Research Swarm in future research projects.
The Open Research Swarm share of the Somus project funding is in total 15 000 Euro, of which 11 000 Euro has been spent during the first project year (2009).
Subject for funding
The possible outcomes of the microproject include:
- Applications supporting the open research group work of Somus
- Applications to be used in the subprojects of Somus
- Research of the open research group work of Somus
- Articles based on Somus (sub)project(s)
- Developed versions of services submitted to Apps for democracy Finland 2009
- Workshop with proceedings related to Somus research themes
Topics for the microprojects:
- social media
- citizenship
- participatory media
- instant media
- immigrant media
- user-driven media service development
- open interfaces
- public sector + mass media + citizen groups
- open Internet-based research
- mashup services
Microprojects must support at least some of the Somus project goals that are:
- To produce basic knowledge about dynamics of information, knowledge and citizenship in the participative media environment
- To develop new technical solutions for user-driven media service development
- To demonstrate and evaluate new media concepts that are enabled through open interfaces between public sector, mass media and citizen groups
- To create and validate a model for open Internet-based research in collaboration with The Open Research Swarm and collaboration network of different actors

How to apply?
The applications must be written in this Somus wiki site by February 8th, 2010. Write your application in the wiki and add a link to the list at the bottom of this page.
The application must contain the following information:
- Applicant
- Contact information
- Aim of the microproject
- Link to Somus
- How this microproject supports Somus goals
- Description of the collaboration with Somus researchers (if needed)
- Outcome of the microproject
- Budget
- Schedule
Applications can be written in Finnish or in English. They should not be longer than 3000 characters.
The microproject work must be done by the end of 2010.
Total funding for this call is 4000 e. The amount can be given to one or more microprojects, depending on the applications and evaluations. If not enough good applications will be received by the deadline, Somus project is not bound to share all the money at this point.
The management group of Somus project is responsible of the funding decisions.
The decisions will be announced on February 22nd, 2010.
